D05 // You Should Definitely Read This Book About Business Building

There are a lot of books about building businesses.

And I've read many of them: Zero to One, Traction, The One Page Marketing Plan, Your Next Five Moves, The Lean Startup, Good to Great, Flee the 9 to 5, and many others.

However, if you are interested in business building and looking for an essential book to add to your resource trove I highly recommend The E-Myth by Michael Gerber.

For a few reasons:

  • StorytellingThe E-Myth captivates with engaging narratives like Sarah the pie maker, illustrating key business concepts. Gerber’s personable writing style makes complex ideas accessible and enjoyable. Real-world examples ground his teachings, demonstrating practical application.

  • Actionable concepts and frameworks — This book stands out for its actionable concepts. Gerber provides a clear framework to describe the business development process, guiding readers through Infancy, Adolescence, and Maturity. His Turn-Key Revolution emphasizes creating scalable systems, while the Franchise Prototype model advocates for building replicable, standardized businesses.

  • Inspirational — Finally, the book tries to inspire entrepreneurs to rethink their roles and adopt strategic approaches. Gerber’s explanations encourage readers to envision businesses that thrive independently. The book’s transformational insights motivate readers to transform their businesses and achieve long-term success.

If you are more into step-by-step frameworks, The E-Myth does not focus nearly as much on that as the inspirational reasons for creating a mission-driven business. However, Gerber lays the ideas and perspectives in this book onto which a passionate reader can continue their learning journey, searching out and diving into other more actionable guides.

If you are at all interested in business building, I highly recommend this book.

And if you have read The E-Myth, do you agree? What other book would you recommend for beginners?
